Justice is emphasised throughout the Quran and Hadith, and it's a fundamental principle that all Muslims should strive to uphold.
The Quran teaches that justice is the foundation of a righteous society. Allah says in Surah Al-Ma'idah, ayah 8: "O you who have believed, stand firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness."
This verse makes it clear that Muslims should always strive for justice, even if it's against their own interests or the interests of their community. This is a crucial reminder that justice should never be compromised or sacrificed for personal gain.
Furthermore, Allah states in Surah Al-Hujurat, ayah 9: "And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly."
This verse highlights the importance of seeking justice, even in times of conflict. Muslims are called upon to mediate and reconcile between disputing parties, but if one party is oppressively mistreating the other, then it's essential to fight against the oppressor until justice is achieved.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) also emphasised the importance of justice. He said in a Hadith (Sahih Muslim) narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar: "Behold! The dispensers of justice will be seated on the pulpits of light beside Allah, on the right side of the Merciful, Exalted and Glorious. Either side of Allah is a place of honor, and the dispensers of justice are those who do justice in their rules, in matters relating to their families, and in all that they undertake to do."
This Hadith emphasises that those who strive for justice will be rewarded by Allah. The reward for seeking justice is not just limited to this life but extends to the Hereafter as well.
Justice is not just limited to the legal system; it should be practiced in all aspects of life. This means treating others fairly, respecting their rights, and striving for equality. Allah says in Surah Al-Nahl, verse 90: "Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded."
This verse makes it clear that justice is not an option but an obligation for all Muslims. It's a command from Allah that we must follow, along with good conduct, charity, and kindness.
In conclusion, justice is an essential aspect of Islam. Muslims should strive to uphold justice in all aspects of their lives and in all their dealings with others. We should remember that justice is not just about the legal system but also about treating others fairly and with respect.
As Allah says in Surah Al-Maidah, verse 2: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty."
